Guys,

Time to buy an Radar detector for me... since Valentine V1 and now 9500i in same price range.. which one to go for. 9500i seems to be more technologically advanced w/ new features.

Since 9500i is out for a while, whats the final feedback? I know lot of ppl did V1 install on top of rear-view mirror, can 9500i be done in same way?

VS

The Escort Passport 9500i runs neck-and-neck with the Valentine One *Est. $400 as the best radar detector in expert tests. What sets the 9500i apart from the Valentine is its built-in GPS, which reviews say gives it three unique capabilities: First, it can remember where speed traps and traffic cameras are located, so it can remind drivers to be careful. Second, the Escort 9500i remembers where it has run into a lot of false alarms in the past, and it quits alarming in those areas until it recognizes a new, real threat. Third, the Escort 9500i detects when the vehicle is moving so slowly that radar detection isn't necessary, and it quits alarming, saving the driver from a lot of in-city false alarms from motion-sensor doors and the like. The Escort Passport 9500i still can't detect radar from quite as far away as the Valentine One, but experts say both radar detectors will alert you in plenty of time to slow down. Consumers who own the 9500i praise its performance and features, but they do note that it is expensive. The Beltronics Pro RX65 *Est. $235 gives more than adequate warning of speed traps, experts say, for about half the price, but it doesn't have GPS and has fewer features to limit false alerts.

SpeedZones and Guys of Lidar both thoroughly test the Escort Passport 9500i and present the results objectively. Laserveil.com also offers a lengthy written review of the 9500i, as well as a video review. Popular Mechanics gives the 9500i an "Editor's Choice" award, but its write-up is very brief. The Escort Passport 9500i has accumulated only a few user reviews at Epinions.com, but they are critical and helpful.

Review of both:

A really nice comparison!

Honestly you can't go wrong with either one. I have 2 of the Passport X50's and they have never let me down. The one in the BMW is mounted above the mirror just like most others here. It pretty much comes down to personal preference.

V1. Both are great and you won't go wrong with either choice. I really like the arrows on the V1 which tell you where the radar is, along with counter so you know when there is more than one threat.

I think I'd probably go with V1 as well, but I"m a little out-of-date, and will take a look at those review links above a little later... One thing that bothers me about Valentine, it seems like he hasn't done much with his offering since about 2005 or so... You don't see him quoting recent reviews, always 2006 reviews in his ads. ?

I feel like he is living off of his patent and not really trying to advance the detector at all. Maybe I'm just not up to date? With IL just passing a speed camera law it may be time to get one. BTW, anyone know how far above the speedlimit you can go before an unattended speed camera nails you?

The speed cams have an adjustable threshold for what point they will trip the shutter. Most urban settings around the country will do 4 -6 mph in higher speed zones, say 35 - 55, and 2 -4 in 35 and below. BTW, speed cams can issue up to 1100 tickets per hour. Wikki has a pretty good write up showing the four ways to use them, but in the US, the most popular is pole mounted doppler radar. On the detector, I would go with what you know, the V! might be old, and Mike Valentine might be getting rich off the patent, but it is still the best around.

All I can say is the V1 has saved me more than a few time in the last couple of years.. Plus, it's very easy to adapt to being hardwired directly into the electrical system of either an E39/E60... And, I do like the directional arrows pointing to where the source is located.

V1 ...
+1. I've got the X50 which has saved me a number of times, but I really miss the directional arrows on the V1.
