Unfortunately I have no answer for you. I looked through the database directly for this -1 value for your account id and couldn't find anything so somehow the software is calculating this based on other variables which I don't know about.
I kinda fixed it, I think. I just sent myself a PM and it went back to 0. I'm a happy camper now! Thx

Hrmm.. same here. I've implemented a code fix so it won't happen in the future (I think) however the negative counts can not be cleared easily since there is no PM re-count feature. This is supposedly officially fixed in IPB 2.3 which should be out soon.

When you get a new message and it's short, you can read it in the pop up window. So the message remains new and unread in your inbox. When you then just delete it without opening it first, the count will be -1.
Also, every message that you have send and chose to safe a copy of it remains in your PM folders and is unread until you open it and read it (yes, read the message you have sent ). If you then someday chose to delete the message, it will be a -1 towards your new message counter.
Once the counter is -xx, every new message raises it.
In my case, I send over 60 PM's to myself (yes, you can PM yourself ). To safe some time you can hit the send button fast a couple times and then just return by using the back button in your browser.
I read the messages, actually I just opened them and didn't really read the "test", deleted them and went to my email account to deete the >60 mails telling me "Iceman has sent you a PM".
By doing this I had done the reset to 0 new messages in about half an hour, while watching TV.

So, ALLWAYS read/open a message before you delete it, because the software is not that smart when it comes to PM's.
