I think it would be great to have a section for all the Service Bulletins and Service Measures.

Yeah... the engines got me confused myself. Because some engines are available in the USA and some are not I could not use hp or bhp uniformly for all of them. I believe I used the hp/lb-ft figures for the engines available in the US and bhp/Nm figures for the engines not available in the USA.

I could put bhp and Nm figures for all the engines but then we Americans wouldn't understand what they are and the same if I put only hp/lb-ft figures then the rest of the world would be confused. I don't think the average car buyer knows what a kW is either, atleast I didn't until a few years ago.

I think the way they are now is OK. Perhaps put the bhp/Nm figures in parenthesis for the models available in the US? So all the models will have the bhp/Nm figures listed and the ones available in the U.S. will have the hp/lb-ft figures in addition.

Confusing indeed, always has been. There's lots of folks outside the U.S. here .. how do you guys measure HP? Is it bhp or kW? When you walk into a dealership which number do they quote you if you ask?

As for the M5, the 507 bhp and 520 Nm figure is correct. I don't know what that equates to in americanized hp/lb-ft units and don't want to post wrong information so we'll just wait for BMWNA to post the official hp/lb-ft figures and use the metric ones for now.

kscarrol: The forum on the site will eventually be this one. We plan to move it over probably this Thursday.

This is a good idea however I don't think it's "legal" to post the SIB's publically online. Perhaps we could list the common ones.. their number, title, and a brief summary so owners can reference them while talking to their dealer?

Great looking site.

Suggestions for including which may have already been mentioned could be:-
Service Bulletins
Recall Bulletins
Known Problems

As its a worldwide site maybe a European Owner's Handbook could be included in the Information Section.

Well, the M5 is not correct, sorry lomag.
On BMW.de they announce the new M5 with 507 PS (HP). Since we measure in HP and not BHP in Germany, the new M5 will not have 507 bhp, it is 507 hp.

I don't really have a solution, but I think it would be better to use the HP figures, since they are a little higher, and that's what you find on official BMW releases and infos.

Alright -- in regards to the engines i've made the default listing kW/Nm for all the engines. I've put the hp/lb-ft figures in parenthesis.

This has made me realize another problem when converting from kW to hp. I ran the proper conversions and got numbers which I posted. For example though, the 545i is listed as 245 kW. When you convert 245 kW to hp you get 328.55 hp but BMWNA lists the 545i at 325 hp. So this has left me a little confused... Hmmm.

I think BMW itself is confused. I just checked 4 different press releases from BMWNA and from BMWAG, 2 from each. They've used 507 bhp/hp/ps interchangably. The only figure in common was 373 kW and 373 kW is 500.2 hp.

Ex..:

BMWAG seems to have stuck with PS all around. 507 ps is 500 hp

But, from BMWNA:

... the new V10 produces 507 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque by European measure.

... a maximum output of 507 bhp (373 kW), a peak torque
of 520 Newton metres and engine speeds redlining at 8,000 rpm

I'm just going to leave it at 500 hp because 373 kW = 507 PS = 500 hp (not bhp). I got rid of bhp completely because I read that no one uses that anymore except the UK. It seems like the majority of the world uses kW to measure power and the U.S. uses HP (SAE).

If BMWNA puts the M5 on their web site and it's different i'll change it. It'll be an even 500 hp though. 507 hp is just wierd. Everyone likes round numbers
