Dunno, I doubt they print the serial no. on the bulbs but it's worth a try! Is your friend's ride a 2008?

2008 e9x's have led license plate lights.
the part number doesn't seem to be in most US systems yet.
also not sure if they fit e60's.

Any updates on this guys? were you guys able to order the part # from the post on e90.net?
I was at a bmw service center on monday and they said that they still use bulbs, not LED's.
They probably don't know or don't notice. I wanted to walk into their area and take apart the light for myself, but.. I think i would have gotten kicked out.
hahaha.
Could this be only in Europe also? the LED bulbs?

I'm gonna start following the thread shragon linked over on the E90 forums. I tried looking up the part #'s listed, but realoem.com only has parts from up to 2006 models listed.
They also have a group buy going on for an aftermarket LED housing replacement set. Didn't seem like anyone had issues with error codes in I-Drive. I wonder if the circuit is different for the E90's.
Also, here's the DIY for the aftermarket housing. The housing looks like to be the same ones they use for the E60. Can any of you confirm they use the same plugs?
And there's also a German supplier saying they have the real OEM housings. If maybe one of you EU guys could double check the validty of this site. I'm definately down for a group buy.

it's on backorder for 2-3 weeks from Germany and it's not in the 2008 US spec catalog, it's only in the european spec catalog.
It's the part # for the LED & the housing (they both come in one piece).
As for the plugs, I'm going to cut the wires coming out of the old lamp housing and use a waterproof butt crimper and splice them onto the new housing.
No...the connector and pins are different...but the power source and supply is the same.
What I'm saying is that I'm going to use the same plug that's in the car but cut it off from the old housing and crimp the wires with the connector onto the new housing.
The only difference is that LED's are polarity sensitive. Only one way works, the other way won't.

I looked up the housing (63267165646) and bulbs (63217160805) for the E90 and E60 and they are identical for the 2006 model. So this seems promising.
I e-mailed Garry to see if he can get the new LED housings and I'm waiting for some E90 guys to install their LEDs. Keep you guys updated.
Also, can any of you LCI owners confirm if the 08 E60's use LED's for the registration plate bulbs?

I have an 08 528i and it does not have LED. I had to replace them with led and get an error msg.
Can't say that the LCIs with active crash headrests don't have them. Maybe they are making changes slowly. Damn I wish I had those headrests.....
I'm interested in this housing as well...

Sup guys, I just got off the phone with Garry and he said the parts are on back order from Germany for about 2 weeks. For those of you who don't know, Garry offers 25% off OEM parts for E60 members. His contact information is below.
Garry Romani

gromani@bmwofnewport.com
So I went ahead and placed my order. Below are the part #'s for everything needed for this retrofit. The prices are already discounted 25%.
part no. ? price ? item name ? quantity
61130007571 ? $1.40ea ? receptical pins ? x4 (2 per housing)
61131378419 ? $0.80ea ? housing ? x2
63267193293 ? $9.30ea ? lamps ? x2
To make this work, I believe we're going to have to splice the wires from our old housing for the new ones. The E90 guys say there's a resistor built into the housing, so there shouldn't be any issues with I-Drive.
I'll keep you guys updated as I hear more from the E90 guys and when I receive my own parts.

There's a resistor and circuit board in it, you can see it in the clear lens cover between the 2 LED's that are aimed at a angle to the plate.
The housing is the same, but the plug isn't. It looks like a wireless phone battery plug. I will find out more info about the plug.
