Does the case fit a standard E60 or just an M5? What's the deal with all the buttons? Are they functional? I have the knob already, but am curious about the base plate and buttons.

No offense taken. I was laughing because I always tell people to search too. I was just lazy.

C'....the plate area is the same size for all versions (SMG, Step, manual) on pre-LCI E60's, so it should just click in. However, since you have a Steptronic I dont think you will be able to slide the knob all the way from forward to back (since the M5 SMG plate has a small-ish round hole). I installed both the M5 SMG knob and the plate with all the buttons a couple of years ago on my 545, but mine was an SMG to begin with. The "Power" button replaced my old "Sport" button......same plug and all. The rest of the buttons don't do anything. I have planned since day one to make them functional, but just don't have the time to mess with them.

By the looks of things it would only work on the SMG e60s... there isnt enough space to move the shift knob on the auto tranny with the M plate installed

Thanks rody. I'm just going to stick with my M5 knob then. Plus, this has the silver plate and I have wood trim. That wouldn't work too well.
