there has been some discussion recently on Top Tier gas and the linked USA Today article does help shed some light. I get from the article that more collaboration is needed amongst car manufacturers and gas marketers. Ford is not in the coalition and recommends BP which is not Top Tier. ExxonMobil is not either but claims their gas exceeds. A California repair authority claims he does not see a difference. A good read. I still contend that filling up at a Top Tier or other major is the way to go..

I hope the link works. Fred

I have been having rough start problems. The tech told me to use Chevron exclusively. I had been using 76 and Shell.

FWIW, I think there is a benefit to using the Top Tier gasolines, but I think the tech may have a voodoo doll hidden in his toolbox.

There is not enough difference in the gas to distinguish one from the other when you are comparing the companies you mentioned nor with other majors. That is just a personal preference of his and a way of avoiding diagnosing the real issue.

Voodoo doll? Funny stuff! But fjwagner is correct. Doubtful you'd notice any difference between the major's (BP, Shell, Exxon, Chevron etc) gasolines. Sure, each have slightly different additive packages but not something you'd likely notice. For what it's worth I've used Shell for a long time and through several different vehicles and have never had a rough start problem. But Chevron is just fine...

I've been using 76 Premium all my left over 5 cars and never had any problems with any car...

Any of the mentioned gas compaines are fine I think and like said its personal preference... I just stay away from supermarket gas and costco gas...

It's the same reason why your car always runs smoother when it's clean and the sun is shining. That said I always use Chevron without exception.

I used costco's 91 octane in Bay Area, CA for years and have no problem or whatsoever. At one time, while listening to costco's voicemail(just as a hobby - just kidding) while on hold, it says that their gasoline includes special detergent (I guess tide) to keep the engine cleaner.

I only use Chevron. I drive out of my way to find one. Just personal preference i guess. Happy E60ing.
