I think it's a rigged test, made by Swedish Volvo proponents to help their favorite car brand improve its safety image.?

Besides, last time I checked I remember being distinctly happy that the E60's tail could be wagged.

Driven my 535d flat out round the Nurburbring four up with luggage - no problems.
I'd swear by the handling

Just playing devils advocate here, but there's nowhere on the nurburgring that you'd make as aggresive a turn as that video. Not unless you were deliberately trying to wag the tail

Here's the article
http://www.askaprice.com/torque-article.as...ontrol&item=561

I wouldn't be so quick to call the test rigged as other makes such as mercedes and lexus do just fine. Though I'm curious to see those videos as I would still expect the rear end to come out a bit.

In the last part of the video, the driver looks to be applying opposite lock. If that were not the case, he would surely spin out. In the hands of novice or an inattentive driver, a spinout would have been more than likely.

If the test is not rigged, then I wonder how a 545i with sport package would fair by comparison?

Well, the M5 is a different car compared to "normal" E60's.

As said in the article there are two matters to this problem
1) The adjustment of the DSC
2) The Runflat tires.

Furthermore can be said that the Swedish automagazine is known to be reliable.

But on has to keep in mind, that the market share of the Volvo is 20 % in Sweden (V70 about 15 %!).
Volvo is now own by Ford, and if the Volvo would not sell properly, Sweden would loose a lot of industrial jobs.

But I would not say that the test is rigged.

Well, there are well-intentioned "tests" that prove to be anything but realistic. The American media has had two super big blunders with regard to testing car safety.

First, the Audi "unintended acceleration" fiasco. Bad testing with rigged cars. Bad conclusions. Nearly killed Audi. 60 Minutes.

http://www.auto123.com/en/info/news/news,v...rtid=22184&pg=3

Second, the exploding gas tank experiment in GM trucks. That was Dateline NBC - look here:

http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/RANCHO/LIE/nbc.html

Both highly respected "hard hitting" TV journalist teams/shows. In both cases cars were tailored to produce an effect.

I don't rule anything out. Again though, if BMW says it was overloaded then it probably was. Does this mean it was over the maximum that the car could carry, or simply that it was too heavy for the tire inflation? The latter sounds more plausible.

1. The magazine is a very sober and reputable magazine.
2. The car has been sent to BMW in Germany - they would never test the car there if they didn't believe the maagazine might have discovered a fault.

1. So were (are) these American TV newsmagazines.
2. I think this would be expected practice no matter what BMW might expect to be the case.
