The I_Drive in my 2008 E61 works nice and it gives you control over so many different aspects of the car.
I love be able to fine tune the climate system and the heated seats.

Jonathan, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I carefully read the NYT piece to see what I would see as potential faults and I pride myself on picking the same items you found fault with. Good job to you .
I agree that the NYT article tried to lump gen 1, 2, and 3 together in the ultra slow category and that is just not so. While we may all agree we would like snappier response the gen 2 & 3 certainly are fully capable of easy manipulation while driving. I think I can attest to many of the imptovements in iDrive via software upgrades (most in my signature). Including the "as delivered" version I am on my 8th PROGMAN/CIP. All but two were real advances while those two exceptions were either slower or fault prone or both.
I have had an '08 335i as a loaner and was impressed with its quick iDrive response progress over my version. All in all I have been pleased with the current version but probably will be even more pleased with the gen 4 improvements when I get my TTV8 6er, whenever that is.

To be honest, the graphics still look old compared to other manufacturers. When compared to the old idrive it performs much better, but it is still inferior to other units.
