EURO NCAP Crash Test Results for E60
#231
While rivals such as the Mercedes E-class, new Audi A6 and Saab 9-5 have all gained five stars, the 5-series needed improvements to the steering column, footrest, door trim, door latch, airbags and software. The Five also had to undertake both frontal-impact and pole tests twice in order to be classed as a four-star car.
The modifications only affect cars built after the autumn 2004 test, so any built between the September 2003 UK launch and this summer would probably only score three stars. The pedestrian impact test threw up even more serious concerns. NCAP assessors slammed the company?s attitude, saying: ?BMW needs to take the protection of pedestrians much more seriously.?
BMW?s 1-series followed its big brother Five?s lead in needing a re-test, although it eventually scored a full five stars after improvements to the airbags. BMW was again criticised over pedestrian protection, described as ?dire? by NCAP, scoring just one star out of four. The child protection rating was also poor, scoring three stars compared with the four scored by ten of the thirteen cars tested in this group

An update from Norway. I have questioned BMW Norway about the modifications made to the E60 and whether they can be made to my car which was built in 2003.
They are awaiting on something from BMW Germany before answering but hid behind the fact that the E60 did well in the IIHS tests in the US.
My guess is that they are going to have to put together some real weasel words to explain away the fact that the 1 series managed 5 stars and yet the E60 only managed 4 after modifications.
This is a great forum!

My Ride: E60 530d Sport - Carbon Black, Black Dakota Leather, Media Pack (satnav, bluetooth, CD changer), heated font seats, through load
The tests got a mention in Autoexpress this week. With picture of the crashed E60.
Apparently there's about 12,000 E60s in the UK, and BMW are adamant that they won't recall them to fit the changes.
E60 struggles to get 4 stars, when the competition are ALL getting 5 stars. Just not good enough.

Let me remind some here of a point Iceman made earlier:
If having a bell go off until you engage your seat belts gets you a point in the NCAP ratings then the E60 (which happens to have this cutting edge bell technology) receieved something closer to a 2 counting other factors.
The more we dig into this issue, the worse the smell gets ...

Not really. You must look at the total score.Take the X5 he got 5-stars from the seat-belt bell. But they had more points then the E60 yet...
If BMW makes like Citro?n a bell for the 4 seats then they maybe get a star more.
Sorry but the safety of the E60 is not so good....
I hope they gonna do a recall. But for that, if they wanted do do that they did it yet.

One thing needs to bes said I think: You cannot compare star rating between different groups (e.g. E60 vs a Renault Modus). The reason is explained in the NCAP FAQ point 22:
http://www.euroncap.com/content/faqs/faqs.php
"The frontal testing method mirrors a crash between two similar sized cars. Clearly a bigger car has an advantage if it hits a smaller car and Euro NCAP results can?t be used to predict the outcome of such crashes. "
So don't regard the star rating as an absolute indication of safety.
Compared to a Audi A6 or a MB E class of course, we are less safe.

From what I gathered the 5 received four stars, mainly because it scored poorly in pedestrian protection. Things like the wiper blades not being all the way under the bonnet so a pedestrian can crack his skull open on it.
Personally, I'd rather have him break a wiper than a windscreen. They're cheaper..
