Znod, You'd better go up and click on the chart; in the "fine print" thankfully, they tell us how stupidly random their "sampling methodology" is.

This is the kind of junk science that the lazy media loves to report without questioning even the most fundamental tenets. And then never bothers to correct.

Cheers,
Ray Hull
Hi Ray:

I am not sure what you objection to the methodology is. I'd have to see more about the way the study was conducted and its rationale to say much about its methods or to judge their randomization techniques to have been ineffective. It seems to me that the outcomes are quite possible depending on a variety of factors. I am at a loss to say much more since I have not read the study or its rationale completely. I did look at the fine print before posting and, given no evidence to the contrary, did not find a substantive reason to criticize its methods or to conclude that its findings are invalid.

It's interesting. The presence of phthalates in plastics has interested me recently, having a new baby in the house.

A lengthier release at the group's website (http://www.ecocenter.org/releases/20...totoxics.shtml) quotes releases from the various automakers, showing that the measured amounts may correlate with their efforts, i.e., the low ones say they've been working on getting them low.

I agree it is wise to be skeptical of the waffle words in reports like this (such as random sampling without specifics on counts, words like "many" and "important"); but the presence of these compounds in breast milk, for example, is beginning to be an issue, and it looks like some attention is merited. I, too, would prefer to see some measurement work done by a group that isn't just looking to hype the newest alleged eco-catastrophe (which this group may be, given that RFK, Jr. works with them) -- but as I say, the numbers appear to be consistent with some conscious materials choices by some automakers, so maybe they are legitimate. I agree the exposures are probably very small, and might be different from user to user (a person who drives with the windows open a lot probably has lower concentrations of these compounds than one who drives with the windows closed -- like me -- but may have other environmental contaminants).

This may be an issue where nobody's sure how much difference it makes, but more of these chemicals isn't better, and less probably is better. If automakers, especially premium ones, make efforts to reduce these compounds -- as apparently Volvo says it has been -- then it sounds good to me.
