I dont understand what the big deal is about the diesel engines. I dont know to much about... diesel engines
One reason BMW hasn't introduced these engines yet in US is the difficulty in overcoming just that issue.

Almost 7 USD per US Gallon fuel price and an entirely different and rewarding driving experience are two of the factors!

In the UK, around 40% of new cars sales are diesel. Mainly for economy reasons, about 30% more MPG than petrol counterpart. All the ones I have driven do go well, different characteristics to petrol models, more low down power. My wifes Saab 1.8Tid (chipped) cruises at 70 at 2100RPM, 175BHP/370Nm, genuine 50+mpg since new. A bit noisy when stationary, but you cant tell when on the move. I'm a convert now, diesel next time for me..
Is Diesel fuel widely available in USA?

My dad has a 525d in Germany. I have driven the car extensively and I would take the Diesel engine over my 530i any day. The torque from low rpm's is incredible, it pushes like crazy at 1500 rpm (compared to the 530i). You can pretty much just use 1st, 3rd, and 6th gear.

And he can easily get US 35-40 mpg on the Autobahn with moderate driving (i.e., not over 160 km/h).
He is still way above 20 mpg in the city.

In the end, everything is personal preference of course.

The 535d moves along at 90mph at 2000 rpm...

My understanding is that in US only lastgen (high suphur) diesel is generally available and very few "City Diesel" outlets but new standards came into force 1st June 2006.

Hopefully we'll get the 4.5 liter V8 from 745d.

Hope not.

Why would one need a heavy diesel V8 in the E60 when about the same power
can be delivered with a more than 200 pounds lighter six-in-line?

You should test drive a 535dA!

Just so we in the U.S. know what we will be getting, can someone tell me what the hp/torque are on the most powerful turbodiesel sold in Europe (535d?).

As of October 15, 2006 (earlier in CA) all diesel sold for road use in the U.S. must be of the ultra low sulfur variety. It's only as hard to find as finding a gas station that sells diesel. I don't know why there is so much FUD behind the fuel.

The 745d has 330 hp and 750 Nm, so it is a stronger engine than the 535d (286 hp and 580 Nm).

Audi will come up with a W12 diesel for its SUV with some 1000 Nm and 500 hp.

But those are baby engines,
get a Scania-engine with a 16 litre V8 with 3000 Nm and 620 hp - perfect for a E60.
