April 25th edition of "Autoweek" just arrived. Here's a short article from page 4:
"Oil-burning Bimmers"
BMW will begin selling diesel-powered vehicles in the United States in 2007, most likely in sport/utility vehicles.
Burkhard Goeschel, a BMW board member, told Automotive News the German carmaker can meet U.S. 2007 emission standards, and the high torque and good fuel economy of diesels make them a good fit for American SUVs.
BMW offers diesels in all but two of its models sold in Europe, and nearly one-half of all BMWs sold in Europe are powered by diesels.

[/quote]Not me. If there was a bigger diesel or I had to pay European gas prices, maybe, but I'm sticking with the V8. Low down torque on diesels is a definite plus but the 535 is slower and I would miss the V8 noise (and higher rpm).

The diesel powered E60's will never sound as good as the petrol versions but the sheer power will astound. Ignore the 0-60 times! Its the mid range acceleration that counts. The 530d is 2 seconds quicker 50mph - 75mph in 4th gear (manual transmission) than the 530i (first e60 model)
I don't want to start a diesel is better than petrol argument but just wait and see what you think when you get them in the States.
I used to be a petrol head and then tried a 530d - I was astounded
never looked back since.

This is the consequence of the new mid-2006 EPA regulations decresing the sulfur in US gas/Diesler to "rest of the world" levels.
2008 might just be right to buy a new BMW for me, my warranty will expire then. I have driven my dad's 525d and I would, even with a 545i now, definitely get a 535d.

Just got back from the 3 across America, and the M brand manager was there. He was asked about diesels in the cars, and he pretty much said that it would not happen.
He gave the following reasoning. The would be able to meet the emissions in 2007 with the low sulfur fuel, but that California was working on new emissions criteria that they would not be able to meet. Asked about having diesels in the other states, he said probably not. They tried that once, and had so many people in states that could not have them, would go buy in another state, and then once they realized they could not register there cars back in ther original state, that there were alot of problems, buyback etc. and that they would not do it again.
So based on what I heard, we may never get em.
Hopefully he is wrong.
