BMW's marketing manager Stefan Krause said in an interview with Automotive News that "we cannot change the blue in BMW's logo and turn it into green", but also acknowledge that the board realises that they must go greener.
After evaluating three choices
1. Make Mini "greener". Mini already is low on emissions and BMW doesn't want to reduce the image by introducting too many new models.
2. Buy another brand that will solve the problem. Several brands have been evaulauted but not seen as solutions.
3. Relive a Brittish brand such as Riley or Triumph (owned by BMW).
.. there could be a fourth one: to introduce a new brand. Stefan Krause states that the board is not really sure how important the fuel econmy is for BMW's customers and he goes on saying "They like to talk about economical cars at parties, but leaves the party in an M6..."
But, there seems to be talks inside BMW how to make the Group greener, without diluting the BMW brand.
