How does Consumer Reports come up with this number? Do they ask each dealer for the # of problems fixed? Or does BMW USA consolidate these numbers to provide to CR?

Exactly. I trust JD Powers much more. BMW had far fewer defects per 100 in their surveys. The JD Powers "Initial Quality" report only looks at the first year of ownership though.

I would never know coz I would never buy one

But on the topic, the problems I have been encounter is normal for me like a glitch here and there and squeaks etc... Pretty standard stuff for a BMW as long as it doesn't affect the fun to drive part then is fine.

They send each subscriber a very long questioner each year. It covers just about everything, from cars to appliances, to hotels, to you name it! In the car categories it includes several questions and you rate your car. You grade each area they cover for each brand/model/yr car you own. That way they can track problem numbers for several years of each car. The questions about cars have not changed in umpteen years, however the cars have become more sophisticated. It's about time they look at this and make some changes in order to be more specific and pinpoint the troubles for each brand/model/yr. For instance, if you have electric window regulator problems, it will be dumped into the "body problems". The old cars had manual windows. At least, that's the way it was, I haven't bother with it the last two years or so.

The results are utilized to form their reliability ratings for each brand/model/yr in their annual Auto Issue.

Consumer Reports surveys have never been perfect, however, I think it's a step in the right direction.

He, he...you are much more trusting than I am This is a quote from auto journalist Davis Kiley who writes for Businessweek.com.

"Some of the category winners in JDP's rankings, though, perennially raise eyebrows: i.e. the Buick Regal and Century (both now discontinued) rank as top mid-sized cars. If you have seen driven these cars and seen the demographic of owners, one can only conclude that the owners are disproportionately GM employees and old enough to have diminished hearing and eyesight.

"The CR rankings are influential because CR subscribers are, by their nature, perhaps the most persnickety consumers around. They may not be a perfect reflection of American carbuyers, but are probably the toughest graders. So, car buyers are not wrong to take the CR rankings and ratings seriously."

Other situations:

- one paint problem (car was 2 days in a sub park and there was a water leak due to eavy rain, the front of the car was all white);
