I'm going to be pendantic... The downturned exhausts featured only on the earliest 530d's (like mine), from inception to the start of 2004 when the particulate filter was fitted... The straight-thru' exhausts didn't appear with the 231ps 530d...
Agreed ... and pedantic

You are right of course - I was just trying to explain that the latest model does look any different to a petrol car from the outside.

(ps - I have the old downturned exhaust too)

the 535d is nice but I'll take the sweet sound of my V8 over a diesel
this is what sold me...

I don't mind being a pedant... It's the only exterior feature I don't like on mine...

Members have said that BMW reads forums such as these.

In that case: PLEASE HURRY AND BRING THE 535D TO THE AMERICAN MARKET!

The Financial Times reports:

BMW plans to launch diesel-powered vehicles in US
By James Mackintosh

Published: July 19 2006 03:00 | Last updated: July 19 2006 03:00

BMW plans to launch diesel-powered cars in the US within two years, using a urea injection system to meet strict emissions rules that currently ban the fuel-efficient vehicles from five states, including California and New York.

Michael Ganal, head of sales and marketing for the German carmaker, said the company believed that diesel cars, rather than petrol-electric hybrids, were the answer to the demand for improved fuel economy as oil prices rise.
