I've never listened to BMW's diesel engine sound. I'm curious how it sound in the cable. I cannot stand the diesel sound when I'm in the cabin. This would drive me nut. I sold my Lexus/Harrier 330 because of this is one of the reasons.

In August Bimmer Magazine, they call the 535D the best all around BMW currently produced. They also said that "the pending reduction of the sulfur content in U.S. diesel fuel from 150 to 15 parts per million later in 2006 will allow BMW's high-tech diesel engines to enjoy a healthy operating life. and new particulate filters to remove soot from diesel exhaust have also been perfected." What all of this means is that, in all probability and with a few changes, BMW will be bringing this and other diesel models to the U.S. in the not so distant future. I don't know about you but the lousy gas mileage and the fact the the roof doesn't fold down are my only two complaints with my 550. If the 535D comes here within the next 24 months it will certainly be my next car. Anyone else want to stand on line with me??

I think this is the article in question:

Are they for real? The suggestion seems to be that to pass the nox emissions standards in the USA a 535d would need an animal urine injection system

I just want one but they ant here!! is there alot of difference between the 530D and the 535D?
Power is increased from 218 bhp to 272 bhp and torque from 500 to 560nm - but I think the real difference is the smoother delivery.
What the 535d has done is lift the 530d from being just a fast exec cruiser - to being a genuine alternative to a V8 like the 540i / 550i - It's not as fast as the 550i clearly, but in a lot of circumstances it will feel pretty close.
BMW have complicated things a little though by bringing in a new 530d with an aluminium cylinder block. This increased power to 231 bhp but kept torque pretty much the same at 500nm. Importantly this also widened the power band and peak torque is now available at 1750rpm instead of 2000rpm in the old car. This new engine is also more refined and from the outside the car no longer has the 'trademark' diesel downturned exhaust.
The new 530d is closer to the 535d in terms of performance, but the 535d still has the edge.
I think that a new 535d with the latest engine cannot be far away.
