I remember that article on that 750. If I remember correctly it was slow as hell or something I dont know. Thats crazy that something in 1999 still hasnt materialized into production if it is such a savior to our planet.

I don't think hydrogen is alternative to gasoline really. Why build another distribution network for hydrogen when electrical network is already in place and with Li batteries (and some new, air-something batteries) one can have elestrical car. Tesla is selling fast roadster for $92K and is planning to build a sedan for $60K in the next year or two. 100% electrical sedan (+ maybe very small gasoline engine that can charge battery in case there is no outlet around) is the future.
correct, it is not CURRENTLY an alternative, but if the investments were made into the technology to produce hydrogen efficiently, then it could be an alternative....As for electricity, it is clearly NOT an alternative for mass useage. First, its very expensive and short ranged. Also, do you know the life cycle and then recycle of those Li batteries are? They are extremely expensive, and not long lasting leaving a toxic waste as they are disposed. We will not know for about 5 years as to the residual effect of all the Hybrid cars on the road today in the US to see the long term reliability issues, but its not looking good, just think about all those big batteries after 5 years when they're obsolete, what are you going to do with them???
as for the real "WHY" ....well, we can manufacture hydrogen free of Foreign govt's, so we gain an energy independence that is currently causing us many issues in the world right now, if you know what i mean..so, it is absolutely a path that we must explore

surely i agree that nuclear is the true and only way to solve all of our energy needs for as long as humans will last on this planet, but alas, we are in no society where such possibilities exist....they already protest now as we use them to power our spacecraft for exploration; there would be no way in our life time that its a possibility as an alternative mass consumption use fuel...
...as for any impact that our energy independence eventually leads to any society that is today holding us hostage over this energy issue, i say so be it, bring on armegeddon!!!
let them reap what they sow!!!
...nd i've got my V8 idling in the cold as im writing this
