Thanks for your answer E60Speed. I always thought it was odd that the glass is not made to be B7 also in the BMW High Security or the Mercedes Guard. If I had a need for such vehicle, I'd rather get it armoured in the aftermarket where I can get B7/B7.

Welcome aboard, 750i Sport !

The difference between B6 and B7 glass is so small. If you would need a vehicle like that the BMW is perfect, just as the MB.
And aftermarket you can allways get something better... Just take a look at the Presidents limo. That's not B7, more likely "double-B7"...

Hey thanks a lot.. Just discovered this site a few days ago..

I think the difference between B6 and B7 glass is a good 10-15mm, that could mean the difference between going home or going to the morgue. I've seen B7 glass as thick as 65mm (Ogara I think), but also as little as 46mm (Carat).. However, I think most B7 glass is around 55-60mm thick. Most of the B6 glass I've seen are no thicker than 40mm. Twenty year-old B6 Mercedes S-Classes pop up on eBay every now and then...

I'm not sure even true B7 would do the job. Anyone see that story on CNN last week? A CNN correspondent/special reporter was able to buy a .50 calibre rifle with AP rounds from a private seller without any problem or a background check! Not even B7 can stand up to that kind of firepower..

I have seen B7 armored cars after terrorists tried to kill the passenger. Trust me, they do the job!
Maybe you can find a pic of Georgias former president Schewardnadse on the web, I couldn't... This car took a direct hit of a granate on the engine - he survived. The driver was able to drive another 500 metres before the car stopped. The terrorists were shooting wth automatic guns on the vehicle too...
B7 is pretty safe!
And don't forget, security is a whole concept, not just the car you drive in. You have other cars around and if the bodyguards know what they do, you should be pretty safe.

Here's a pic of the attack on former georgian pres. http://www.lascointl.com/vehicles/custom.htm

The assailants actually taped their attack on the Shevardnadze motorcade, I saw it on a TV program about the lives of professional bodyguards. An American security consultant was brought in after the attack.. He said that if the RPG round had hit just a few inches higher, it would have penetrated the glass and entered the passenger compartment.

I totally concur with what you said about security being more than the car. Interestingly, Shervardnadze was still using the same model W140 Mercedes when he was kicked out of power last year. I would have thought MB would give him a new W220 Guard. I've always liked the BMW 750iL High Security better though, the Hong Kong police unit that protects VIPs uses them. Very cool vehicle!

Iceman, you knowledge of armoured vehicles is very impressive.

Yep. That's true. The windows can't stop it. B7 is built to stop rounds from an AK-47 in example.

Having seen the car of the US President all I can say is... B7 sucks. Man, this car is great. But waaay too expensive.

Unreal. I mention the AK 47 and then I read the article and they mention it too. Funny.

Ak-47 rounds are not very powerfull, something like a .308 hunting rifle is much more powerfull. The AK is just very reliable and shoots fast. My friends in the Police here have found AK-47's that have been buried in mud for more than a year, and the fire perfectly after just being washed off.

Have a look here http://www.carat-duchatelet.be/s-class/ballb6.htm

B6 easily stops AK-47 ( 2112 J energy ) and even Nato 7.62 (3442 J energy )
B7 can stop 7.62 armour piercing

B7 glass makes the car look armoured, the B6/B7 car doesnt look armoured unless you look very closely

That'S probably the reason BMW makes it B6/B7, not B7/B7.
