Man, I don't care what the purists say about the M division diluting the brand. Seems like they put a lot of engineering and innovation behind these two cars to carry on the "motorsport" experience and didn't simply slap turbos on an engine and calling it an M. I'm am utterly in awe and impressed with the stats.
If memory serves me right, BMW have in the past used turbo engined cars and they were known to be good in turbos. I think for the road car there was the 2002Tii and the 745i (really old model). And in F1 didn't BMW turbo engines do well? I remember they were really impressive in F1.

I think the problem is that the M division always resisted the temptation to do two things - forced induction (relying instead on insane RPM, which is of course much truer to the motorsport heritage) and also slapping the M badge on 2.5 ton trucks. I think these are going to be incredible vehicles, and the new engine will be a monster, but these two bad boys are much more AMG than M. And that's not necessarily a good thing...

Also, you're right that there was a limited run 2002 Turbo but the 2002 tii was actually normally aspirated.

It is getting an automatic slushbox, not DCT. What a complete failure. The front is hideous beyond belief. What are they thinking?

Question is, will BMW get lazy and just use this powerplant in its current form for the next M5? With 555hp at 6000rpm, with a 7000rpm redline. A N54-like powerband is not M5 worthy. Please don't do BMW.

BMW will drop in a sportier transmission when it puts this monster of a motor into the next M5. Can we say zero to sixty in about 4 seconds flat??

Question is have you driven the automatic on the X6 50i in sport and manual mode? I feel that was leaps and bound over my automatic in my 535d (2005). Before i got my X6 i wasn't so convinced about the so called performance upgrade in the automatic but when i drove the car in M mode in Sport i was like WTF!? I wasn't sure it was an auto anymore.

And now they say the improved the automatic again for those M models. I can say for sure there was no need of DCT, especially on a car of this size.

True and agree but then again it seems the heritage in Germany is not so apprecaited anymore. While BMW is doing this Porsche does diesel SUVs ... i mean... we still have to wait an see Ferrari SUVs !
