E91 Door Locks Failed

A friend of mine had his e91 door locks fail with the doors locked. His wife had to climb out the back. The dealer told him that it has happened to other cars and that BMW has a TSB on checking the door locks. I have never even considered being trapped in a car because of an electrical problem.
Are the door locks all electric with no mechanical linkage. What do you do if you are in an accident and the electrical system fails?
Is my E60 set up the same as the e91?
