thanks Richard. I've heard that X3 tends a little bit "bumpy". How's the ride on the freeway?
I wouldn't describe the ride as bumpy. It's not as refined as the E60, however. It rides more like the 3er, and, much like it, is remarkably agile.

I have an X5 loaner for the day (a brand new one with 1500 miles on it). It's a very very nice SUV (the huge sunroof is cool), and I like it better than the Porsche Cayenne I test drove a couple years ago, but I honestly don't know if it is worth $56k. The 3.0 engine feels a little strained, and while the technology is nice, you can get most of the same options in a Tahoe for low 40s w/a V8. Also, I was surprised at how small the cargo area is in the back. I think the storage compartment is probably is the same size as my '08 Volvo XC70.

If I needed the room, I would rather have the 535xiT than the X5 or X3. That's just my opinion, however.

X3

I get a X3 loaner almost everytime I take my 5er in for service. Really small, no one could sit behind my drivers seat. There is better small suv's for the money.

You must be really tall. At 6 ft tall, I can easily sit in the back of my X3. Plus the cargo area is as large as an X5. It is plenty big enough for me plus it get 24-25 mpg. It may not be as good a value as other small SUVs but it does drive like a BMW. I test drove several prior to getting the X3 in 2006.

Yup, the X3 feels small to me. I am 6'3, usually put seat all the way back in what ever car I drive. Back seat room looks like a 3-series sedan. Same goes for my 5-series, there is maybe two inches between my seat back and the rear seat. My 5er is going in for service soon, so maybe I can take pics of what I am talking about for the OP.
