My Ride: 2011, X6 Hybrid . Alpine White , every option. 20" Conti' NON runflats,OEM trunk spoiler , LUX V3 AE's , HP Thunder Fogs , custom front bumper reflector delete........
Unless they put the I6 TT in one I would strongly recommend the V8 and Sport package .The V8 X5's stomp most things on the road ..... yes even in the twisties !!
I have driven the X3 and the X5. Personally, i would wait until the X3 facelift simply because they aren't a lot of "technology features" in the present X3 model. However, if you can afford the X5-i would take it wayyy more over than the X3!

Well, for the money you spend on X3, why don't you buy an Acura MDX? It's a terrific SUV, with more room, has the torque vectoring system - SHAWD. Even an article in Roundel favors it against the new X5 3 liter. And Car and Driver also favors it in a big comparison test. Reliability and resale would also be pretty good.
If you have the money and don't need the extra row, the the 535xiT would get my vote.

Just had a chance to drive a new X3 and while it is nice - I'd still go with the X5. Why sacrifice the room for the same gas mileage??????

X5 is more expensive, that's the main difference. Actually I think it would be nice if BMW offers a large car (sure, not minivan) that can haul a big family and everyone be happy and safe in their seats. Of course MB's R class doesn't sell too well...

I happen to have an '07 X3 loaner while my 550i is getting a detail. The 260 hp and 6 speed auto is much nicer than the older 225hp 3.0.
