Talking of your signature ... any chance you can make it a bit shorter? Every thread you post in takes up about three pages more than it needs to...!

Edit : the M5, instead, doesn't have neither the active steering (10x better than M5 steering) or the Dynamic Drive Control (wonderful, the best device on E60) .
What have ?

You serious??!!! The active steering is the single worse feature available from BMW, it absolutely destroys the feedback through the wheel. The M division knew exactly what they were doing when they left it off.

My 535d (DMS tuned) could easily keep up with a 545i, I had a few blats with one, off the line the petrol is quicker, but once on the twisties the diesel did very well and my mate struggled to keep up let alone get away. My 335i was alot quicker than the 535d, I was getting times of around 5.5 seconds in the 535d and sub 5 seconds in the 335i sport touring, then when I added the Xede those times were down to sub 4.5 seconds.
But the main difference is not how quick the two are on a highway, it is how much quicker the 3er is on the twisty roads, there is a road near me that has a long sweeping, but tight, corner that I could not take at more than 65mph in the 5er, I can take that same corner at just over 80mph in the 3er, that is a big difference. In the CSL you can take it in the nineties, and the CSL is not as quick as the 335i when timing yourself, but it will destroy all the 5ers and all the 3ers in real life.

"The 545i is no quicker than an M5 in real world driving" C'mon man!! that is the biggest croc of shite I have ever heard!! It is the real world that really seperates the M cars from the regular cars.

I thought I had seen the last of this thread. I guess I will find out for myself in November.
