An M5 vs. a 3-Series? Think about it.

Hmmm, a 10 year old M5 for $13k. Be prepared to spend that much again in the first year to fix whatever is wrong. Complicated and expensive car. Forget "power" and stay mainstream. Get the 335 and put a JB4 on it.

The 335i will make more power. The reason I say this is because an E60 M5 with 150K miles will spend most of its time on a lift or jack stands making 0 horse power.

I have owned e36/e46 m3's, and have a 2005 545, which I love. First of all, stay away from SMG as the pumps tend to fail. The cheapest pump that I have seen on ebay is like 2k, and labor is crazy expensive. E60's are complicated cars with a lot of electronics, and M's are especially high maintenance. I would get the 335, although I have heard that they are really heavy cars.

I wouldn't be so quick to down play the 335. Yeah the m5 stock puts down more power but it really doesn't take much to get the 335 to put down more power and pull on the m5 with ease. M5 is by far the better car as a whole but pure performance, a jb4, intake, down pipes and some e85 and you will be at about 420hp+ to the wheels but lighter and faster. Those 335s are pretty damn quick but I'd go with the m5.

Without a doubt go with 335, get the mods done and laugh at M5 in your rear view mirror, you got lots of options to mod that 335, JB4 , MHD flash, DP's , chargepipe, FMIC, LPFP upgrade to run more E85, and off course maintenance is cheaper.

Yes you can mod a 335 to have more power but the overall fit and finish/options with a M5 is better then a 335. OP, if you are trying to get a fun track car or something smaller and potentially faster then a E9x 335i/x would be a great option. However if you are looking for a nice high speed cruiser that's comfortable flying down the freeway that feels like your going 75mph but really going 120mph, a M5 would be a great option. Just my perspective.

Thanks for the input guys I've been test driving both cars and I'm still not decided. I've test drove 2 M5 and I love it's power, but I've read a lot about the smg pump going out. And it looks like a pain in the ass. I love 5 series cars as for I own a 2008 550i and love the v8, but it's hard to get more hp out of them unless you're spends lots of money. And I test drove 1 335i 6 speed and it picks up quick just lover how it drove. The only thing is its hard to find a fully loaded 335i and 6 speed. And I've looked for 535i 6 speed and that's even harder to find. lol
