Hi Norham,
depends what you need, big space more comfort, or smaller size and diesel power lower consumption.
Two totally different segments and cars! The 320d you can tune it up otw it's not a race car, but as I saw you had petrol 520i don't you. So if you want to try it out why not, but for me it will be always e60 until F10 I mean
For us E90 was small. For you it might be a bit more dynamic FEEL.

A lot depends on regular journey too. I have had the occasional E90 when my 525 has been in for warranty work. I much prefer E90 on bumpy B road ,cross country trip to my office, it feels like a BMW should. Seats/driving position a lot better than regular E60 , in my opinion. If space is not an issue, I would go for it.

If you are looking to go to a E90, dont get a 320d sport, get an Alpina D3 instead. Its much more powerful and its cheaper. It will probably hold its value better aswell.

Presumeably you have some reason for thinking about doing this ?
Personally - I would probably rather have a 320d with all the trimmings than a 520d without.
But I would rather have a 525d / 530d

My advice is take a few 3er and 5er for a test drive. As E60525d said, have a look at the Alpina D3 as well. I've only heard great things about the car and it's going to be more exclusive. That is a real car with it's 200hp!
But let's face it, whatever one you go for, you'll end up with a great car - it's a hard life

Take a look at the latest issue of Car (actually the new issue might be out by now in the UK so it might be a recent issue), they compare the 320d against three others and it's the clear winner.

Although I would stick with the 5 personally, the new 320d is a very fine performer.
