no way youre getting the engines this september

march 2007 as i previously said
March sounds realistic - I'm sure you said Sep '07 before?

If I was buying new now I'd only touch the petrols (except 540i) and 520d/530d... (525d and 535d about to be updated) - although cracking deals could be found on the outgoing models I guess...

September 2007 seems to be mentioned! But I can't believe it will be that long... I reckon the new engines will hit this September myself... My guess is that 540i will be dropped and replaced by 535i, new 525d and 535d. Maybe updates for 530i to ~270bhp.

at this rate I venture to guess March 2007 for 2008 models. just like MY06 and MY07s.

I think this is right ...

The 335i and 328i coupes are not available in the uk till the 23rd Sept 06.

From what my dealer told me I think the 325d and 335d will first appear in the coupes (maybe Oct / Nov) and then trickle down to the saloons at some point toward the end of the year or early 07.

So Spring 2007 seems logically for them to hit the e60.

One thing I am struggling with is that the 328 / 335 line up suggests the demise of the 330i.

However, my dealer also told me that BMW have announced a 330i coupe with a new engine - I think this will have the direct injection used in the 335i so the improvement will be mainly to economy. This implys the 330i saloon will also continue.

325d is interesting cause this is a detuned version of the 3.0d engine - so it looks like the 525d 2.5 litre engine is toast. Also - the 335d seems to be based on the NEW 330d / 530d - so it has an extra 20nm of torque and more HP than the 535d.

My 330i will be built early August, so I will have the current engine.

Is it me - or is this the biggest series of engine overhauls in history?

The 325d, 335d & 335i (saloon) are on the UK configurator now but not on the coupe. Not definitive I know but looks like they're imminent. Also, the ABI have rated the 325i/335i coupe and 325d/335d/335i saloons...

Indeed - it makes sense in some ways. Same engine off the production line, just different software... (Maybe different turbo but this is just a 'bolt on')

The 335d is based on the new, lighter block, piezo injection... Like I said previously, avoid buying 525d and 535d at the moment unless it's a cracking deal!

I thought the 2.8i engine was for the US market only?

Not for the UK! The 330i may receive a small boost, to 272bhp.

Trouble is - you could almost avoid buying anything.

I'm getting a 330i in Sept, which will be the current spec and so will probably just miss out on the new engine (arghhh)

Not sure, but it's actually 3 litres! I would guess about 440-450Nm...
It would appear to be 'only' 400Nm! Reason being is to allow a manual 'box to be fitted I guess!

The peak torque hasn't increased from the old engine but I bet the spread is far better... (And the block is lighter etc.)

The 535d is limited by the gearbox, so there isn't much to gain from a new incarnation of the engine. DMS and others could give you 380bhp if it wasn't for the 'box.
The reduction in weight will probably be the biggest benefit but not enough to warrant waiting for.

I think the new quickshift 'box coming in the coupe could be more significant than the engine

I agree on the weight point - definitely worth waiting for IMHO! My guess is the updated 'box will turn up with the updated engine... The weight is lost at the already heavy front-end so every kg will help handling.

Does anyone know exactly when the 530d got the new improved engine (lighter block etc.)?

If I was looking at buying a used 530d, how could I tell if it had the new or old block?

Thanks
