Haha, surprised vegastrashed knows what it is related to. Rootkit is a program that embed itself deep into the operating system such as MS Windows etc. It can be good or bad on its use.
A year or two ago, Sony & their music partner decided to be very sneaky and shipped their music CDs with guess what?? Rootkit! The rootkit would self-install when the consumers played their CD with the provided Sony player. The rootkit is used to mask detection so that Sony can keep connections with the PCs that were infected. Since Sony infected the PCs with the badly written rootkit program already, a hacker with bad intention can also exploit the same rootkit to do other things. Rootkit is extremely difficult to remove, the only sure way is to reformat the harddisk! That is the whole short story about Sony & rootkit...and last time I heard lawsuits too.
Hope everybody had a good Happy New Year!
