Thanks for the comments! The STi really is a blast to drive. It literally pins you back in your seat. Also the sound of the boxer engine is just amazing. However, not even close to the bmw in terms of refinement and comfort.

Yes, the lights will go on and off automatically in auto mode. Don't be surprised if they're on in broad daylight when the sun is low in the sky...it is a safety things and actually makes perfect sense.
Also, the "adaptive" headlight feature works only in this setting as well.

tab545, I think you made a good choice anyway. The 545i is a pretty good blend of luxury and performance. The STi is only on one end of the spectrum, but it performs so well that sometimes, it's worth the rough ride and rattles. Yes, it does look a little juvenile... as many "professionals" have taken out the rear wing. Personally, I like it... although it tends to be a cop magnet. It definately is one of the best bang for the buck vehicles in terms of performance however... not to mention that the AWD would be nice in Chicago. haha... I would be happy to let you test drive if you were local.

Thanks for the tips guys. The Auto setting seems to work. I just received a call from the BMW dealer saying that the steering sensor is in. Can't wait to get it installed. It feels like I have power steering only half the time! Not to mention having to turn off my turn signals manually after exiting a turn.

EBMCS03, So far so good... The 530i seems a little underpowered, but sufficient for day to day driving. If I could do it again, I would probably have gone with the steptronic for the 530i. With that being said, I think it looks much better with the SMG shifter and the sports steering wheel and paddles.
Wow! Really? Thats a first... Most here who've gotten SMG will get SMG again if given the chance unless they had major problems with it then I would understand...
How many miles do you have? Like Rudy said I'm wondering if you gave SMG enough time to prove itself.

I have 4k miles on it now. My wife drives the car half of the time... and she prefers to use the SMG's auto mode. As many of you know, it can be quite jerky. I also noticed that my 1st to 2nd gear shifts are pretty slow. Perhaps I just need more time with the vehicle. I am a pretty quick learner, so I would think I've gotten it down by now.
