Sounds like great fun! Too bad, I just returned from a tour of the Munich plant. I did not get a chance and wanted to go to Dingolfing...is that the birthplace of the E60? What about Zaha Hadid's building in (Leipzig?). Which cars are made there? I'll have to decide later...maybe by December. Good luck with the plans!

Tell us about Munich.. I'd like to do Munich as well this time out, but know nothing about it at this point. I hope my contact at Dingolfing will be good enough to patch me through to Munich for the second part of our meet - once we get the body count for Dingolfing cemented in place. We have possibly 13 people right now and two months to go.

And yes, Dingolfing is where they make the 5, 6 and 7 BMWs. Around 1000 5ers, 200 7ers and 100 6ers per day.

Munich was great, though I would have rather seen 5's coming through the line. I was there with a friend to pick up his 330i. The factory is pretty impressive, though one of the older ones, it has been updated with some of the most current robotic equipment. It's weird to see so much square footage with no people in sight because it's all done by computer and robots. My only regret is that we had a late tour and so the BMW store was closed even before we started our tour. I would make sure whichever tour you take that you do one early enough to go shopping in the BMW store! What's nice is the (temporary) museum adjacent to the factory. They're in the process of constructing the new museum, but the temporary one is worth taking a look-see. I know it's far from Dingolfing or Munich but I think you need to look up Liepzig and see the building by Zaha Hadid if at all possible - some day I'll make it there. It's a beautiful facility, though I'm not sure if they are currenly touring that facility - they must it's known worldwide architecturally. I wish I could join you all. We had a chance to drive to Austria...but not into the hills which I very much wanted to do! All in all it was a dream come true...our taxis through our trp, in order of rides, were a Mercedes E-Class, Audi 6 series, Mercedes S-Class, BMW 5 Series and - oh well, some sort of VW Minivan - though the driver of the vw was the most friendly and entertaining!

The week before we went, someone else suggested the same thing - and he was right, the store closes at 16:30 -before the tour ends, so we arrived at the factory at 13:00 and went into the store prior to our 14:00 tour.

It was just a store though, most stuff you'd find at a dealership - maybe more clothes - but the thing we enjoyed were the offers (sale prices) on some clothes and the 1:18 scale models. I collect them and they had some beauties.

If you liked the robots in Munich, and that's something you'd enjoy, you MUST go to Dingolfing. It was absolutely amazing and yes, the floor was almost empty and I have never see buildings so large -so spacious, bigger than football fields.

I've been to the old Munich museum, but back in the early 80s.

Thanks for the tip on Liepzig - maybe another year? Who knows. And you're correct - it's over 400 KM from Munich. We in Germany can do it easily another time.
