In case you needed any more evidence that BMWs are for enthusiasts that love to drive their cars (and Mercedes are for folks that like to get from A to B in comfort), here's a story from my experience at recent driving events:

Mercedes-Benz Road Rally (June, 2005)
Goal: Drive well below limit.
Driving instructor repeatedly points out that "Anyone causing the tires to squeal is driving too fast."
Although they had many different cars there, this was the rule, and anyone driving the car to the limit risked getting yanked. I drove everything that they had (M350, M500, C240 Kompressor, E, ...) and tried to stay just below the radar to avoid breaking their event rules.

BMW Ultimate Driving Experience (June 2005), and others
Goal: Enjoy around the limits ... and enjoy it!
Driving instructors are there to drive with you to demonstrate and help you experience how hard the cars can be pushed, how well the cars handle at the limit, and just how dynamically superior the 3 is versus the competition
(note: Mercedes C class is not present, although it did get high marks in a recent Auto Motor und Sport comparo).

Although both manufacturers sell similar cars to similar segments, the message couldn't be more different: BMWs are made to be driven ... by people that enjoy it!

May it continue just like that, for as long as I'm around!

Hahahahaha the MB folks are probably afraid that their poor handling at the limits would deter customers away from their brand, that's why they instruct all the drivers to drive below the limits of the car
