If you read the rest of his story, he purchased it on his Amex and they have a product protection warranty/insurance. So, he called them and they credited him for the full purchase. Pretty sweet! I was recently approached by Amex for their platinum card and I remember the representative pitching this product protection warranty. Didn't care much about it then, but now that sounds pretty sweet...

It's really not a good deal getting a platinum amex card unless you travel a lot (flying every single week) and you're willing to let them arrange all of it including flights, hotels, transfers, car hires etc. Only then can you begin to offset the cost of the platinum card. I had one back in 1995 when I was flying about 50 times a year and it almost made sense, but in 1996 when I'd cut down to about 10 flights a year, half of which were vacations, it stopped making sense. I did manage to get an invite to the Bruntingthorpe driving experience day in 96 and got to drive all kinds of exotic cars around the track and even got a go (as passenger) in a Jaguar XJ220.
