Here's an odd thought for the day:

As I get ready for lunch, I usually grab a handfull of change from my desk so that if the tab is 6.45 or 12.13, I won't get a pocket of change back. I usually grab a quarter, dime, nickle and two pennies. I figure with that combination, I won't get more back than I give. For example, if I only carry a quarter and it is 6.02, then I give up a quarter, but get 2 dimes and 3 pennies back, so that isn't ideal.

There has to be some mathematical uber-nerd who has figured out exactly what to carry so that you don't have to walk around with a lot of change in your pocket all day but at the same time you won't get $0.96 back in change when you are out to lunch.

anyone else ever think of this stuff, or do you just charge everything and forget it.... or do you rob the "need a penny" cup wherever you go?

Ha this topic is hilarious... What a concept... But I have to admit I am guilty... I HATE change... Sometimes for example my total is $6.23 and I have a $10 and $5. I will give the $5 and come up with $1.23 in change. just so I don't get back dollar bills. I even do this at drive-thru's I try and get rid of all my nickles and pennies first then go for the dimes (I have a stash of change in my car i grab when needed)

how about this one for size:

say your tab is $11.43. you give the cashier $22.00 (you had a few extra bucks you didn't give the stripper, instead she took a $20. loser) but you give $22 you have left in your wallet so you get back one $10 bill with 0.57 right. and he says "sir, it's $11.43."

uh, hello?! instead of giving me $9 (one 5 and four 1s, and 0.57) just give me a ten and change (which usually goes to tip jar) to keep the wallet thinner.

maybe it's just me, but i hate a phat wallet in my rear. i use the debit card 95% of the time.

I always use Amex, everywhere. Pay the entire bill every month. So I never have change, I HATE change!

Secondly, I work at a bar and the only change I give are quarters. If I owe 17 cents, I give a quarter. If I owe you 9 cents, you get nothing...

^ Just to let you know $20 - 11.43 is $8.57 not 9, just saying.

I would think that the most you would need is 2 quarters, a dime, and a nickel, that's 65 cents so if it's more than that just give a whole dollar (34 cents shouldn't be too much of a burden)

I figured it out... It's 51 cents... As long as you have 51 cents in change you can always make it a dollar.

For example total comes to $5.49 well you got it covered...

Lets say the total is $5.51 you would give the cashier $6 and 51 cents. you get back an even buck.

AWESOME!!!

EDIT: Nevermind this mathematically does not work. The only perfect equation is to carry 99 cents in change.

which in my mind defeats the purpose... This thread is busted!

3 quarters
1 dime
2 nickles
4 pennies
