Whenever I see a watch commercial, chances are the minute and hour hands are always at the 10 and 2 position, signifying 10 minutes past ten. Any reason for that??

Having the dial show the time as "10:10" gives the illusion of balance and makes the dial more pleasing to the eye.

I remember reading once that at 10:10 the brand name of the watch as printed on the face is clearly legible.

Both of the answers by ipse dixit and maxbuck are right. The second hand is usually at the 7. During pic taking it's easy with a quartz watch because you just pop out the battery and the time stops, but with an automatic watch I heard that they remove the main spring to get it to stop. Even then, if you look at watch catalogs, there are always a couple of watches with the wrong time.
