Actually, that's not entirely true. The guide is downloaded hourly via the Internet connection, but it's local on the box when you're using it. Guide lag isn't due to network access.
You're correct that the VOD commands traverse the Internet, and that's realtime.

good looking out joe,,, annoying thing is.. just as i typed a response.. the damm comp froze.. and i lost my wireless1!!! got me so mad.. then it got stuck and i had to manually shut ut down!!! grrrrrrrrr
