A car at idle WILL benefit from air moving through the radiator. As ever, the fan will come on if necessary. The cooling pump I'm sure will pump at the optimum speed to maintain temperature. Most of us spend nearly 40 minutes a day idling with the a/c on as we sit in heavy traffic.

However, i do accept that there is ( or used to be in the old days) a risk of the engine oiling up or whatever it's called if it doesn't get a good blast once in a while. But I still contend that a once in a while wait at idling speed for 1 hr with the AC on isn't going to do any discernable harm.

I reckon it's a bit like starting the car with the headlights on, or turning the wheel while stationary. Not the best practice, but it's not going to hurt once in a while.

I feel sure these cars are built to withstand a fair amount of 'sub-optimal' usage. For goodness sakes, they sell them to our wives too.

I know a guy that had $8000 in damage done to his one week old 530 when the valet came around a corner too quickly and smashed the side of the car after misjudging the active steering.

I voted for "sometimes when I have no choice"

I just returned from a trip to San Diego where I used the hotel's valet parking, it actually turned out to be a good valet experience. I noticed the valet guy parking the luxury vehicles out front near the entrance, facing outwards towards the incoming traffic. Sure enough an hour later while waiting for the hotel shuttle I spotted my E60 first in line in the "great looking car section"
