Tonymac, while you made some excellent points, I have to tell you, it is a bit naive to assume that ego is the reason people commit crime. People turn to crime in 75% of cases because of lack of a moral code. Greed is a great thing and one of the very few things that holds capitalism together. What you're advocating is not even socialism, but communism. And actually, I think there's nothing wrong with either socialism or comminism - except for the fact that neither can successfully be achieved without sacrificing some part of the working population's welfare for the benefit of those who are not. I believe that capitalism is the only morally right system for a society to live in - in case that's not clear. That's not to say that I'm an opponent of paying the military or the EMTs (EMS) what they deserve. As a matter of fact - and some people here might start arguing about this - Gov't contractors that work for private firms are a good way to start learning about how to make that happen...

Long story short, on many of the points you make, I respect you and agree with you. However, I urge you to look into your moral principles and trully convince yourself that greed, selfishness and ego are wrong - and if you succeed, then feel free to donate your e60 to me

PS Don't take any of the above as an attack on your person - I'm just speaking my mind. I'd not respect someone who is not being honest with me, hence I'm being completely honest with you. My disagreeing with some of your philosophy doesn't constitute any conflict at all - it is at most an arguement. And arguements between rational people always give birth to TRUTH.

Actually, that's why I believe that ego and self-interest lie at the beginning of a capitalist society. One's sense of self-preservation would not dictate morals that are contradictory to logic - i.e. vote for giving 20Billion to GM that was bound to go bancrupt anyway was contradictory to that dictated by logic and instict of self-preservation.

looking back on my last statement, it was kind of dumb. i just wasnt alright with someone taking shots at defense contractors.

i am a supplemental employee for the US government because they cant fill positions. whoever here doesnt like the the fact that your taxes pay my salary AND i am in the private sector, I challenege you to take my job. Of course, i challenge you to take my position in the military, as that is the position I am filling. The only reason I have my job is because the military/government cant meet requirements.

if more people joined the service, they wouldn't have to employ people like me in the private sector. Walk in to your local recruiting station and ask for my job. I bet you will get it. who is up for the challange? Have we learned anything about government contractors tonight? if so and you still have a problem, i suspect you will be at your local recruiting station tomorrow.

if not, that is fine too. That is your choice as an American.

I totally understand the "no offense" clause. None taken as I find it really hard, get upset at little letters on a screen ( ).
Honestly, I was driving around in a 1991 Volkswagen golf before I got my E60 (no mods or even paint for that matter). It barely ran. I bought the E60 when my wife said she was pregnant. Kind of like a really big impulse buy lol. I was thinking about security/comfort and reliability. I actually felt really bad owning it after some come to Jesus moments and I settled within myself to donate or sell it for charity when the time is right.

In my honest opinion, I do believe that the lack of a moral code is a major contributing factor or our degradation. Capitalism only works only when the people capitalizing give back. Now, by giving back I mean charity of course and to be clear, charity is much more than just giving. The original meaning of charity or love ((agapē)which were used interchangeably) , means an unconditional loving-kindness toward others. It is selflessness that helps communities and teaches the truth. It is selflessness that makes you reach out and pick up the child that fell down. It is selflessness that reaches those who would otherwise be left in the outside.

I don't think my views are communist in nature but more of an understanding that we all need each other and believing otherwise is selfish (or the the belief in self as opposed to community).
