It's more likely so that the glass willnot hurt you in an accident.

And when you roll, or see that you can not avoid the crash, take your hands of the steering wheel and hold them in front of your chest.

I've never been to a proper motorsports track that let you drive with the windows up. In my experience, the rules always are that the windows must be down.
