I never did either for the 1st gen Xbox due to modding 
However for the Xbox 360, online gaming such as Xbox Live is the only reason why I play It'll take your gaming to a new level (such as team missions and live interactive/competing with gamers worldwide

Well, I was talking about my xbox360 I don't have the 1st gen xbox. But can you really play with people worldwide, or just people within the US? Isn't there lagging if you try to play with someone in say.. Australia?

I haven't notice any lags (I am an IT guy), our squad (GoW and Chrome Hounds) play against team from Japan, Germany and US all the time, response time is really good

im used to playing cs, and know for fact that if your trying to be a semi-pro (i was) , anything over 20ms ping is just not playable... and for that you need a closed lan at a tournament... hence i dont play online

I think itis all down to the ISP how fast itis.

But with a PC you need a fast computer to play or you will have big lag.
But with Xbox itis OK cos all the same machine, just the ISP you need to worry about
