Where's this board coming to?

SG535 asks a question and gets his arse flamed for just that.
NOT very subtle.

Back down a little bit .

No-one is saying that a 535D (DMS or not) would beat an SL55, that's just carzy, however having driven them & many other high perfomance saloons, the real world differences are not huge between a DMS 535D & a standard SL55. The SL would win, but not by a huge margin. You've proved that the torque differences are not vast by any stretch.

Not sure why you chose to throw Kleemann into the equation, unless you were stating Modified vs Modified. I've driven a Kleeman SL65 with over 660BHP & believe me it's insanley fast & at a recent event i attended in my modified RS6, it crucified my RS6 & the modified E60 M5 along with almost everything else except the RUF GT2 (modified). However at higher speeds it does start to lag, as the best it could achieve on the runway was 190MPH, yet my RS6 & the modified E60 M5 could manage 181MPH, so again not a massive difference.

I've raced an SL55 in my modifed RS6 & i won the race consistently, as did the DMS modified E60 M5 that was at the same event, now that i own a DMS E60 535D i'm telling you the differences are not great, but the SL55 would win. Of course the Kleemann SL65 would crucify the 535D, M5 & SL55 as it would many other cars.

No intention of argueing over the stats as my experiences are real world & current, but my point was that the OP's question was hardly that stupid. As stated above, if it was SLR vs 316i, that would be a little different.

That said, i nearly bought a CLS55 AMG, as i just love the way they look & the SL55 or 65 are amazing cars, however im not quite old enough yet for a big Merc or a rag top.

well coming from your mouth it sounds more convincing. Nevertheless, having driven the 535d for a weekend , i can say that it is incredible for a diesel but it simply cannot compare to anything ///m or /AMG... unless the DMS job creats an absolute monster i cannot see this happening . BTW i tried to explain that not only does torque matter but it also matters how torque is delivered. The bmw 535d revs to 5300... but anywhere after 4800 you are simply wasting your time. The SL55 on the other hand not only has more torque but it keeps this torque output all the way to 6500rpm... and with new software it can go south of 7000rpm. You forget that gearshifts take off from the 535d's performance

/dont get me wrong, for me the 535d is the best 5 series on the market (bar the m5 of course) and if i could get rid of the 530d i know what id get. But it simply isnt a GT car

Steve you are still cool I understood your story and you were still the fastest on Nurburgring...

I tell you a real story yrs ago... and belive it or not see (1st car thread) with my RS I raced and win w a 500 Sl v8 Compressor why? Because the guys said is not going more than 220-228km/h and it is true for a sec or two TGV was there no kiddin' really but 1.8L is never faster than one of the fastest train nor a compressed SL...and I wud never say it, but from outside it might seem like that the guy came to me at the petrol station and shaked hands and asked can he see what car is that w magnesum wheels ??? that's what matters FUN.
