Unfortunately, being former military doesn't entitle you to carry. Otherwise things would really get interesting. I have a Desert Eagle .44 and that thing makes ANYONE nervous.

Yeah, looking down the barrel (even when cleaning) it's absolutely cavernous!!! And it sounds like a cannon when fired. Still, it is a good thing vets don't automatically get to carry - Charles Whitman was a vet, so was the "beltway sniper" - guys that probably should not have had the access they had to firearms.
But Virginia's gun laws are so lax that anyone can get a gun there. Virginia is the prime state of supply for most guns on NYC streets.
