Teenage son of British Formula One champion killed in crash at Brands Hatch [ Linky ]

"The son of 1964 Formula One world champion John Surtees was airlifted to the Royal London hospital after he was struck on the head by a wheel and tyre from the car of Jack Clarke, which spun into the wall exiting Westfield Bend."

i was watching this race live on telly. They stopped the race to get him to the doctor on duty and then air lifted the guy. Damn.. the father must be in shock.

After Senna died, I thought F1 cars were designed so the wheels won't fly off in an accident. I wonder if these F2 cars implement such a feature.

Cheers

YES indeed. I was hoping he would be better. Kinda remembered Senna's accident. Motionless, doctors, helicopter...

Mr.Palmer should make sure these cars race in the series use the wheel tether. I am sure it should have it so perhaps one has to find out why it happened and prevent it from ever happening again. Also I feel this particular track doesn't have good run-off areas for single seaters. (not wide enough).

cheers

The Formula 2 cars designed by Williams use the exact same safety regulations given by the FIA in 2005 for Formula One. And yes, they have wheel tethers (wires, actually).

Now they need to obviously find out why the tether failed.

The only slightly positive note in this tragedy is that Surtees died instantly. Nonetheless, what a terrible time for the family.

Yeah.. both cars had same thing. Perhaps their tether system isn't so good. Well Mr.Palmer said there will be a full investigation into the accident. I hope they improve the system and also improve on that track run off areas.

thanks

cheers
