I can't imagine a lobby/petition getting anywhere. At least 99% of people are on the side of lower fees. They'll be thinking "yeah, let's get those convenience ATM's to charge only 50c, that'll be great". They won't think that at 50c it's not a viable business anymore. Just like getting a one-off mom'n'pop store to charge the same for a liter of cola that walmart charges when you buy a pack of 12 can't work either.

Damn John, sorry to hear about this, I hope it doesn't pass and you are okay bro. Maybe they can just cap the fees charged at ATM's in strip clubs and casinos? (not that any of us know anything about those)

They should be going after credit card companies, I have known people with rates as high as 27% !!!! That is excessive, but paying $2-3 for NOT having to go find a branch of my bank is worth it to me just in the gas saved. I use a credit union for my banking so branches are few and far between, but I do get great rates for my mortgages, savings, an car loans - the trade off is I use ATM's all the time when I need cash because I am rarely near a branch.

i dont see people complain when they're at the casino paying $50 to use their credit card. Useless bills. Plan ahead, or pay the fee. It's that simple. Or get a bank and PAYS for ur ATM fees! There's a couple banks out there that does that. Passing these idiotic laws are real dumb. Honestly, I've paid at MOST 2 or 3 ATM fees ever since I had a debit card. I try to to either keep cash, or go to my bank. Doesnt get harder than that. I am always when people say, damn I gotta pay ATM fees. Well, tough luck. It's not free for ATM machines to operate. $3 per transaction is decent. IMO, there should be $2.50 minimum. For $100 it's $2.50 and then a percentage on top after $100.

Good luck John. If there's a petition to stop it, I will be the first one to sign.

Off to the airport. Seattle here I come. Then Alaska. Talk to you guys soon. Signing off and turning off computer...for the first time since my last vacation

I agree John, like I said, there aren't many branches for my bank - so when I need cash I know I will have to pay the fee, no biggie I just pay it.

deranged: i agree with you and I work for a major us bank. If you dont want to pay the fees
for the convience of using an atm thats right where you are, plan better and go to your bank.
The senator does not get that consumers are paying for the option/convience to use the atm, no one
forces you to use one. good luck with this. nola530

John:

Your post made me sick to my stomach. I feel for you.

Now let's talk politics and the way things are done in DC. Unless you can somehow get millions of signatures and get thousanfs of people avalaching their Congressmen and Senators with calls opposing the bill, you and your industry need to hire a top democratic Washington lobbyist and fast. If you need names, I will get them for you. A top lobbyist is very expensive but if you can get enough like minded members of your industry to chip in, it is well worth it. I would also have you and your colleagues in your industires schedule visits with all of your Congressmen and Senators. And bring the whole family to these meetings, including kids, to demonstrate all the lives and families that this legislation's passage would shatter.

Thank you for all your support and kind words.

Here is a link to the ATM Industry Association's online petition against this amendment. It would really mean a lot to my family if you could all sign the petition. I don't know that it will make a difference but it sure can't hurt. Thanks again, everyone.

I just signed up for the petition. By the way, I saw this on CNN:

"experts suggest that the Harkin proposal is a long shot. With so many amendments vying for the attention of lawmakers to make the final draft of the financial regulatory reform bill, chances are this one will get left on the cutting room floor.
