Looks like it a trend now.
alot of sport car makers are designing new 4 cylinder engines.
Not just BMW

the new 911 six-cylinder engines have been designed so they can be downsized if necessary

Remember that original Porsches where 4 cylinder... also remember the 916/944/944 turbo/968....

Yeah..back not too long ago all cars had 1 cylinder and even some were drawn by horses!
