(CNN) -- Authorities urged residents in parts of the the U.S. Gulf Coast to heed evacuation warnings before Hurricane Ike makes landfall, warning of a "massive storm" that could affect roughly 40 percent of the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Texans sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic Thursday on a highway from Galveston County into Houston.

"Do not take this storm lightly," Michael Chertoff, secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, said Thursday afternoon. "This is not a storm to gamble with. It is large; it is powerful; it carries a lot of water."

Thanks for all of the love fellas! It seems as if everyone is off except for me tomorrow. Well, till noon at least. Traffic is f'n CRAZY!! right now, many of the gas stations are out of fuel and I had to wait in line for at least 10 min. to take on some fuel. When I started to pump gas it didn't even pump because there was not enough pressure due to everyone pumping all at once. It would come out in sprits, and I had to wait one person stopped pumping just so I can get gas to my side.

Doing fine, thanks for asking. Definitely breathing a sigh of relief that Ike passed us by. Now watching and praying for our good friends over in Houston, who welcomed us after Katrina...

I just had a layover at IAH at 2 PM today on the way back from Nicaragua. There were a bunch of people at the President's Club saying they were flying out due to the storm. I was thinking about you guys and hoping you're all well. Good luck guys! -Calvin

Everything is still fine in Houston, so far.
Thanks for the concern.
The media has really been hyping up the storm. The grocery stores and hardware stores have been busy; water, plywood and batteries sell out fast. There have been lines at some of the gas stations. Some of the coastal areas, such has Galveston have had mandatory evacuations but I will be staying home. I hope Ike is kinder to me than Rita was. I had one of my trees fall on my house during Rita.
Stay safe!

We won't know how bad things will be until the hurricane actually gets here. City council has been keeping the mandatory evacuations going smoothly. The City of Houston and its surrounding areas have done a good job of keeping things calm and orderly. I feel bad for the folks that have to evacuate. Traffic started early today, and there is still traffic in some spots right now (midnight). I'm not in a evacuation area and the only thing we can do is to shelter in place. Hopefully things will be okay. Thanks for thinking about us in Houston.
