Heavy G, based on your expertise, how do you feel about the Rebel XSI as an intro to the DSLR world. I have some experience years ago with standard 35mm SLR.
roger:
The Rebel XSI is a GREAT camera if it is your entry to the DSLR world. Great bang for your buck too. A couple of my relatives have shot incredible images with that camera.

Although I would suggest the 50D, but it might be out of your budget.

Remember: YOU create the images, not the camera.

Thanks for the advice. When shopping for lenses, do they have to be "brand specific" ex: canon for canon, or is Nikon lens compatible with Canon body etc? Do you have advice for a good place to shop for lenses? Is there advantage/disadvantage to buying local vs. Amazon? Sorry for all the ?'s, appreciate the advice.

Lenses do not have to be brand specific..as long as the mount matches..
But as far as I know, canon only makes lenses for canon, nikon only makes for nikon.. there are 3rd party lens makers such as Tamron and Sigma that makes great lenses for both canon and nikon at a much lower price.
When shopping for lenses.. remember the XSi has a focal lenght multiplier of 1.6x due to its APS-C sized sensor. So a 50mm lens would mean you would be shooting at 80mm.

I would buy from Amazon.. no tax/no shipping.. These major brands have great warranty so don't need to worry about getting your gear fixed.

Finally a Nikonian. Me too. My equipment is close to yours:

Nikon D200, 3 years old and 21,000 pictures.
SB600 speed light
12-24 f/2.8
18-200 VR
70-200 f/2.8 VR
60 Macro f2.8
TC 17II teleconverter
Plain old Tripod

I am debating on a good fast lens, either a 50mm f1.4, or the new 24-70 f2.8. The Tamaron 24-75 f2.8 also has good reviews and its 1/3 the Nikon price.
Get the Nikon 50mm f1.4 for sure. It's just a phenomenal lens. and for the price you can't beat it. If had to shoot only one lens, this would be it. http://www.popphoto.com/cameralenses...ic-bullet.html

I also like the 24-70 f2.8 and is the lens that is usually on my camera. It's a beautiful lens but it's a bit of comitment due to the wieght so I often find myself taking my 50mm if I am out and about and plan to haul my camera around all day just due to the weight difference. For 1/4 the price of the 24-70 get the 50mm and zoom with your feet. (Of course what I really mean is get both!!!)

IMHO don't get the Tamaron, there is a reason it's 1/3rd the price of Nikon. Invest in quality glass. In fact when I bought my 70-200 f2.8 VR I traded off my old Nikon 80-200 (generation 3 lens) and it was still worth $600.

Thanks heavy! I still have much to learn. Do you have any examples of your pics using the 50mm 1.4?
