i just got this one for the wife a few months ago. she loves it and it takes near slr quality pics

What's that kind of thing worth in the US?...... I have read a couple of reviews and they seem to be very good.... did you need to do much editing to those evening pics?

Cheers

They didn't drop the sensor size (it's still exactly the same size). They only dropped the number of pixels coming from it. They decided that going for a "headline" number of pixels was counter-productive. It resulted in poorer image quality due to the pixels in the CCD being too small. The G11 has larger pixels (on the same size sensor) and can improve image quality.

Summary = less pixels but better quality. Nobody really needs more than 10MP anyway. I won't be surprised if the G12 also has 10MP when it comes out, or a bigger sensor with the same physical pixel size (which is the only way the megapixel figure should grow, not by making them smaller in the same size sensor.
Correct except that for one additional detail...the larger pixels improve image quality in low-light situations. The extensive review at Steve's Digicams (linked by me above) explains this a bit and talks about the low-light performance of the camera.

There is a point where, unless you're enlarging your images to poster size, 10MP is more than enough. I'm glad Canon had the balls to not cave in to the pressure to increase the MP count and put an end to the "more is better" war...

I agree with the canon G11 recommendation, but it is pretty big for a compact camera. You might want to look at the new canon Powershot S90. It has the same sensor as the G11 but in a much smaller package. It also has a very fast lens with a 2.0 apperture. This is almost unheard of in a non-slr and makes it great for low light pictures without flash.

I think the S90 is almost the perfect compromise if you need a compact camera with near SLR features and quality.

I agree that the G11 is a bit bigger than a true "compact" camera and I also agree that the S90 sounds like a great model if size is a critical factor in the decision. If size isn't the most important issue, then the G11 is probably a no-brainer.

Either way, it never ceases to amaze me how, even indoors and under "normal" lighting conditions, I'll take a photo with the G11 in full automatic mode and the flash won't fire because there's enough ambient light!

I love that you can choose the ISO setting too. Set it on ISO800 and you'd almost never need a flash. Above that they'd get too grainy. I know what you mean about how astonishing it is at capturing light in low conditions. I've hardly ever used the flash on it.

I also find that I'm taking better quality images than I ever did before. They're nearer to HDR than most cameras can manage. I look forward to the day (in the next few years) where cameras have the full dynamic range we can only manage via photoshop.

Thanks a lot for the advice guys. Just took delivery of the Canon G11 today. I took my time to try and find a UK model at the best price.

'Atta boy Bruce! Even though I'm sure you'll love it, after you've had some time to play with it, don't forget to post an update letting us know what you think!
