Need to desperately retire the Sony 7.2MP compact camera. I want to buy an SLR but the wife doesn't like the SLR because "you can't carry it in your hand-bag!". I need something that take brilliant photos almost near SLR quality but should be a compact one. Any suggestions from the photography experts here. No real budget in mind at the moment.

I'm a photography newbie, so definitely no expert.. but I recently purchased the Canon G10 and really like it. It has the ability to control Aperture, Shutter speed, etc. like an SLR, but it is a compact camera. It got some really good reviews:

I've had good luck with Canon. I'm on my third digital Powershot (had a 35mm Sure Shot before as well). The one I have at the moment (SD800 IS) was purchased at the holidays three years ago, so it's only a 7.1. Still a great camera and I don't plan on replacing it anytime soon.

Bruce, if you are looking for a compact camera that handles close-up pictures well I like my Casio Exilim. Mine is an older 7mp model but similar models continue to get good reviews. I like the long battery life and very quick cycle time between pictures. It has a wide variety of preset modes too.
I also recently bought a Canon Powershot 1100 because of it's longer optical zoom, and good reviews. But it is tough on batteries (but it takes AAs and they are easy to buy - get rechargeables - and keep handy) and cycle time is slow. That said, it was cheap enough to throw in my pocket and not fret about anything happening to it.
One feature I also suggest shoppers pay attention to is the memory card format. I try to stick to SD card devices so I can stock a few of those and not a collection of 3 different types.

About 8 years ago, I bought a Canon G3 (when if first came out) and finally decided that it was time for an upgrade. The G11 never ceases to amaze me at how advanced it is over the G3 as well as other point and shoot cameras.
Also, even though his rants are usually pointless , you may want to see what C says about his G10:

I agree but in October, Canon relesased the G11 which, in my opinion, is a slight improvement over the prior "G" models and is a fantastic SLR substitute. The G series Canons are not as small as some of the other "compacts" out there but the slight increase in size will give you much more control and flexibility in your picture taking.

I fogot to post a link to, in my opinion, one of the best sites for learning about digital camera reviews and features...
http://www.steves-digicams.com/
If you read the G11 review, particularly "Steve's Conclusion", you'll see that the Canon G11 does pretty well:
