I feel your pain!! I get a mouse or two in my house and am currently trying to catch "Ninja Mouse" as the wife and I have been calling it, who has managed to clean out my traps and even set them off on multiple occasions without being caught!!

Check for and fix any openings using expanding foam, steel wool, metal plate etc.

Get a cat. Assuming it can get up into the attic. The mice will be gone in a week.
One place we lived had a barn overrun with mice. We were given a kitten from a neighbor's litter. Within weeks, we never saw a single mouse again in the barn. Occasionally though, the cat would try to bring a live mouse into the house to show off her catch and to play with it.

I use the rat poison which comes in a small box shaped like an isosceles triangle. Buy it at Home Depot-type places. Catnip and Creme Brulee to every mouse. They flat out love that stuff. We gotta keep our killings under wraps because the Federal Government has verified the sighting of a Preble Mouse in our neighborhood. Thus, all mouse-killing is a risky business. What if I give a Preble Mouse the dirt nap? The Feds actually stopped a 20 million dollar add on to our local high school because a bulldozer driver thought he saw a Preble Mouse. The little bodies stink bigtime- especially if they have been eating the cheese off the traps. Good advice from all of the posters, though. Good luck.
