Sorry to chime in like this but i was thinking of getting into DSLRs myself. So i was asking you pro guys
what's your opinion for a good DSLR for starters. I'm not that new to photography since i got a feel of exposure and diaphragm settings on my Sony DSC-N2.
From what i've seen Cannon and Nikon kind of rule the DSLR playground even entry level or real pro level, but what's your opinion on Sony DSLRs. I mean it's rarely spoken of in DSLR club enthusiasts but i wonder why?

Its hard to say at a glance about the Sony A900. But I read (and respect) dpreview's conclusions. It sounds like a very good camera in some respects (24mp sensor, built-in image stabilization, resolution, viewfinder, pro feel) but only so-so in other respects (high-iso, jpeg softness and too much noise reduction you can't turn off, lack of features incl live view, large files to process, demands of high quality lenses). It doesn't sound like a starter DSLR especially considering its price and the lens prices to get the quality glass needed for such high MP.
It doesn't sound like you are looking in the entry DSLR price range so IMHO, a D90 sounds like one of the best mid priced DSLRs on the market (or D300 if you want more pro level adjustments) and the Canon 5D MkII (no full review yet) at the higher end (but may trump the Nikon D700 in several areas)
First I must mention I am a Nikon fan (I have the D200) so I am biased.....

So i assume canon eos XSi and Nikon D90 are almost the same and direct competitors for entry level DSLRs. Any comments?

No no. I'm not a brand biased person when it comes to DSLR cameras. Coming from a handycam Sony DSC N2 (10.1MP) it's not hard to ask why so many people shoot with Canons and Nikons while i think Sony does such a good job at handycams. Maybe they are not fully into DSLRs.
By no means i don't like Canon. I'd like a good startup DSLR camera, that's all.
I understand. The thing is i was not aiming at that Sony A900. That (i think) is the best DSLR Sony has to offer and by no means will be in my budget.

The Nikon D90 (12 MP) isn't entry level, I'd call it mid level (around $1000 US body only). The D60 (10MP) is closer to entry level ($650 with a VR base lens) and the D40 (6MP) is entry level at $499 with a base lens (no VR). I would recommend the D60 plus a second lens (55-200 VR) to make an excellent starter outfit. Stepping up to the D90 gives you a high MP, live view, movies, more advanced features, a better focus system (for tough situations), etc. I like the 18-200 VR lens (a great every day lens and sharp enough). For high end lenses, the 70-200 f2.8 can't be beat for sports photography. I added a 1.7 teleconverter for more zoom and little loss of image quality.

I am not real familiar with the Canon line. But for Nikon....
