thanks pare! the teenager is my daughter, the kids on the wall are Al's boys and the girl is my cousins daughter, and the little princess peekin' around the corner is Al's daughter - simply adorable!

i'm become the "pap" of the family, i bring my camera everywhere! and i'm sure you already know, this hobby is almost as expensive as our "main" addiction!

Nice start

A few technical pointers,

Remember Depth of Field when taking photos. f/2 is much more shallow than f/16. Use this to your advantage in the right situation for example by "defocusing" (e.g., f/2.8) the background you can put the attention to the subject up front.

Remember the background. Pay attention to the items in the back, are they a distraction? Maybe "defocus" may not be enough and you need to recompose.

Framing: You're already better with this than most and while I don't like "rules" it's a good guide to follow the rule of thirds http://www.silverlight.co.uk/tutorials/com...ose/thirds.html

Avoid harsh mid-day light. Evenings, mornings, and overcast days are generally more flattering.

Enjoy

You have a beautiful family John! And... a good start to a new hobby! The great thing about digital photography is that you get to experiment without worrying about film. Play around with your shutter speed, aperture, ISO, exposure compensation, lighting and camera angles to get variations on your shots. You have a great camera to start with and a broad focal range coverage with your lenses. Take lots of pictures and get a feel for what you like and what looks good to your eyes. Have fun with your new hobby... and remember, the world can always use better pictures!
